Principles of the Program

The Principles of the Program represent a set of values that support personal growth, recovery, and positive living. While the Twelve Steps provide a path for self-examination and change, the principles offer practical qualities that can be applied in everyday life. They serve as guides for building stronger relationships, making responsible decisions, and developing a greater sense of purpose.

These principles are not rules or requirements. Instead, they are ideals that individuals can strive toward as they work to improve themselves and contribute to the well-being of others. By practicing qualities such as honesty, courage, humility, and service, people can strengthen their character and create a more balanced and fulfilling life.

Whether someone is new to recovery or has years of experience, these principles provide valuable reminders that growth is an ongoing journey. They encourage self-awareness, compassion, perseverance, and a willingness to continue learning. Through consistent practice, these values can help individuals navigate challenges, deepen their connections with others, and find greater meaning in their daily lives.

The following principles are commonly associated with the Twelve Steps and reflect many of the spiritual and personal qualities that support lasting recovery and personal transformation.

1. Honesty

Honesty is the foundation of personal growth and recovery. It begins with being truthful with ourselves about our thoughts, actions, and circumstances. By practicing honesty, we create a solid basis for positive change and build trust with others.

2. Hope

Hope provides the belief that change is possible. It encourages us to look beyond present difficulties and trust that a better future can be achieved through effort, support, and perseverance.

3. Faith

Faith is the willingness to trust in something greater than ourselves. It does not require perfection or certainty but encourages openness to guidance, growth, and new possibilities.

4. Courage

Courage is the strength to face challenges, fears, and difficult truths. It allows us to take necessary actions even when we feel uncertain, helping us move forward despite obstacles.

5. Integrity

Integrity means aligning our actions with our values. It involves doing the right thing consistently, taking responsibility for our choices, and striving to live with honesty and accountability.

6. Willingness

Willingness is the readiness to embrace change and learn new ways of thinking and acting. It opens the door to personal development by encouraging us to remain teachable and receptive.

7. Humility

Humility is the recognition that we do not have all the answers and that growth is an ongoing process. It helps us remain open-minded, appreciate others, and avoid the limitations of pride.

8. Brotherly Love

Brotherly Love reflects compassion, understanding, and concern for others. It encourages us to support one another, build meaningful relationships, and contribute positively to our communities.

9. Justice

Justice is the principle of making things right when we have caused harm. It encourages accountability, fairness, and a sincere effort to repair relationships whenever possible.

10. Perseverance

Perseverance is the determination to continue moving forward despite setbacks or difficulties. It reminds us that meaningful progress often comes through patience, persistence, and resilience.

11. Spiritual

Spiritual involves developing a deeper understanding of ourselves, our values, and our connection to the world around us. It encourages mindfulness, gratitude, and a sense of purpose.

12. Service

Service is the act of helping others without expecting anything in return. By sharing our time, experience, and support, we strengthen both ourselves and our communities while contributing to the well-being of others.
